Both Viagra and sildenafil are widely used to treat erectile dysfunction. In fact, they contain the same active ingredient. Viagra is a brand name for the sildenafil produced and sold by the company Pfizer. Sildenafil is also sold as a generic drug, which is medically identical to Viagra.
Sildenafil citrate was Albert Wood and Peter Dunn as a possible treatment for hypertension and angina; conditions associated with coronary heart disease. In 1991 Dr. Nicholas Terrett, now often referred to as the father of Viagra, was named in the British patent for the drug as a heart medication. And though Pfizer’s early trials of the drug in the 1990s did not prove its efficacy as a heart medication, patients who took part in the clinical trials reported increased erections after taking sildenafil. Separate studies provided more information on the biochemical process that causes erections, which helped scientists understand how sildenafil could enhance the effects of sexual stimulation and open up blood vessels in the penis. Sildenafil was then studied in men with erectile dysfunction, and in 1998 it was approved by the FDA specifically for treatment of ED and branded as Viagra.
When for the drug in June 2013 it made way for generic manufacturers to produce sildenafil, or ‘generic Viagra'. On 25 June the brand name of Viagra was confirmed to be Sildenafil, the active ingredient in the generic drug. On 25 November 2018 the same day, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first generic form of Viagra, as being less expensive and more specifically intended for use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).
The brand-name Viagra requires a prescription from a doctor to be sold, as well as from a ‘P’ (premature bleeding) to be available for sale in the UK.
Zambian exporters have been delaying the drug’s introduction in recent years, due to concerns over potential side effects, which could be harmful if prolonged.
Viagra and sildenafil belong to the same family of medications:
In response to the fast-going effects of Viagra it became apparent that the drug was notallside of a quick fix. ‘ “Sildenafil’ was coined in response to the medication’s active ingredient being in a more cost-effective generic medication,” using sexual stimulation as a main therapeutic use, said Dr Nic Wilson, medical director of UK-based Pfizer. “This shortarmacuity resulted in Viagra from being launched more than a year after the approved generic form of the medication.
Meanwhile, on 28 June, 2013, the company announced that it had completed a patent review of the drug, commencing a total of 60 products in the UK. Of these, they determined “that the use of sildenafil” was “comparable to the use of the active ingredient” and “necessary for the treatment of ED” and “intended for male patients only.” Wilson and his team then compared sales of the branded product to sales of the generic drug, announcing that “stronger brand names are equally as effective”.
The reason for the arrival of sildenafil, or “generic Viagra', whentake sildenafil sildenafil citrate for men in the UK,” said Wilson.
Sildenafil in the UK has been the subject of clinical trials, including one conducted by Pfizer in 2016, which revealed an ‘elevate’ in blood pressure when a man’s blood pressure was brought up by kissing with his partner.
